Thoughts about Life

Thoughts and observations about life --- usually philosophical and/or spiritual in nature. Isn’t that the essence of being human? --- trying to make sense of what is and what might be.

If you choose to read any of these thoughts and observations, I hope you are prompted to think. Science or Faith?

OK, I admit I'm a LOSTaholic. We checked out season 1 DVDs of LOST from the library over Christmas break (2005) and were quickly hooked. We then borrowed “tapes” of the season 2 episodes to date, and then sat down to watch LOST “real-time” for the first time last night. All that background just to bring up the “man of faith” vs. “man of science” conflict that is often talked about on the show, especially between Jack (the doctor) and John (the walking miracle).

Love and Acceptance

The following excerpt is from the 1 Oct 2005 issue of Mark Lowry's e-newsletter ReMarks. You never know when or how God will speak to you, but it's always a good idea to be listening for it and pay heed when it happens…

Do you see a paradox between this entry and the previous two? Yes? Then you have missed my point.

On “Being”

In my previous post I said:

The Bible is clear. Homosexual behavior is a sin. Just as fornication (sex before marriage) and adultery (sex outside of marriage) and polygamy (claiming to be married to more than one spouse at a time) are sins. Just as pedophilia (sex with children) and bestiality (sex with animals) are sins. Most pedophiles would claim that their actions are a result of “who they are”. Claiming to “be” a homosexual is no different.

That provoked more thinking on this concept of “being”.

Just As I Am

I just watched the ER episode entitled “Just As I Am”. I’m not an avid ER watcher, so I don’t know the characters well… in fact I just had to look up the character’s name. Dr. Weaver meets her birth mother and their relationship deepens until Dr. Weaver tells her birth mother, an evangelical Christian, that she “is” a lesbian and doesn’t want her birth mother’s love unless she also gets approval for “who she is”.

Getting Sidetracked by the Important

… Although desecrating human remains of any race or ethnicity for sport, glory, or wealth is disrespectful; and even though I would probably be upset if someone today dug up the remains of any of my grandparents for no good reason; I believe there are many many more egregious wrongs committed in the world today that mankind ought to focus on…

There are many battles to fight, the trick is figuring out which ones will change the tide of the war and focus the efforts there.

The American Corporation

The corporation demands the complete and unwavering loyalty of the employee. His life outside work is only a distraction; her family can never be allowed to get in the way of meeting an arbitrary, unreasonable, and insignificant deadline.

The corporate policies and procedures must be followed or Bad Things will happen. Sometimes Bad Things happen even if you do follow them, because they mixed you up with someone who didn’t or some other insignificant cog mistyped the information into The System.

No good deed is left unpunished. No amount of good you do will atone for one ounce of failure.

The rules change as you’re trying to figure out the old ones. Every time you get close to hitting a target, they move it or decide it wasn’t the right target.

And your unfaltering loyalty, your sacrifice of personal life and family, is rewarded with apathy, credit-stealing, oblivion, shrinking benefits, longer hours, less time off, and a layoff if you are too close to retirement.

Is God an Abusive Husband?

Are Christians taught to conduct their relationship with God too much like the relationship of an abused wife who stays with an abusing husband? No matter how much the husband dumps on the wife, she just passively submits, usually assuming there must be something wrong with her. It has to be her fault, he is a good man… at least that’s what so many people think. So she loves him, defends him, sticks with him, and continues to get beaten… who else would love her back, anyway?

I don’t think that is the kind of relationship God really wants. Be honest with God. Get angry with God. Argue with God. If you don’t air your true feelings, your relationship with God will be poisoned by bitterness.

A government is the most dangerous threat to man’s rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.
